Introduction
| Moving
from town to town making home in various parts of rural France, a
single mother and her daughter take refuge in a small town and open
a chocolate shop. To their dismay, they are met with skepticism and
are welcome with controversy for their new store opening. During the
time of Lent, the town's people are reluctant to accept these new
arrivals and shun any delicacy such as chocolate. Chocolat is a good
food film because it uses a common dainty to create controversy
in a small town, causes characters to emerge
from a life of reclusiveness into a life of desire, and also brings
a town together. The characters in Chocolat evolve with the town
as chocolate transforms from the forbidden fruit to an underground
indulgence. |
